More construction jobs added

Warren Buffett famously declared that the slumping US economy would have trouble rebounding until housing stabilized and we started seeing new construction jobs. Well, there’s been plenty of good news on the housing front, and now we’re seeing good news on construction jobs in the latest jobs report.

After five years of hemorrhaging jobs, the construction industry has become one of the bright spots of the labor market — a hopeful sign that one of the most damaged sectors of the economy may finally be starting to heal.

Overall, the government’s monthly jobs report, released Friday, showed continued modest growth in December. The economy added 155,000 jobs, on par with the monthly average for both 2012 and 2011. The unemployment rate remained at 7.8 percent.

But a closer look reveals that nearly one-fifth of the jobs created were in construction, marking only the third time since the recession ended in June 2009 that the industry has added 30,000 workers or more. The surge capped one of the largest three-month gains the sector has seen since the recession began in December 2007.

The return of construction jobs is an especially critical component of the economic recovery. That’s partly because of the sheer number of jobs lost — more than 2 million since 2007 — but also because of fears that many of those workers’ skills may not translate to other industries, rendering them permanently unemployable.

This should help to turbocharge the overall job market. If you’ve given up looking for work, not is the time to get back at it.

  

Job openings for truckers

A worsening shortage of truck drivers is pushing up freight rates and delaying some deliveries, defying the weak economy, high unemployment and falling gasoline prices.

“It’s getting harder to get drivers,” says Mike Card, president of Combined Transport of Central Point, Ore., and incoming chairman of the American Trucking Associations. “I could hire 50 guys right now.” He now employs 393 drivers.
Many Baby Boomers are retiring and fewer young people are interested in long-haul-trucking careers that often require drivers to be away from home for weeks at a time, says Ben Cubitt, senior vice president of Transplace, which manages freight delivery for businesses.

Despite the 8.2% national jobless rate, many unemployed construction and factory workers can’t afford the $4,000 to $6,000 cost of a six-week driver-training course, says Rosalyn Wilson, senior business analyst of consulting firm Delcan.

The training costs are certainly an issue, but this can be a an excellent option for plenty of people looking for work. Do your research and see if this might apply to you.

  

80 Percent of Jobs Openings Unlisted?

Could it be true? Is searching for a position on job board a complete waste of time? According to an article posted on the WSJ website, landing a job posted on a job board just might be a crapshoot. Minneapolis-based CollegeRecruiter.com founder Steven Rothberg says more than 80 percent of job openings are actually unlisted. This means job hunters have to be savvy searchers with excellent networking and researching skills to score an unlisted job.

Because 80 percent of employers “will try to promote from within or rely on employee referrals,” there are several things job seekers must if they want a shot at an unlisted job:

Look for signs: Keep up with what’s going on in your industry. Read trade journals, follow analyst commentary and monitor the stock market for indicators showing which companies are growing, restructuring or contracting out services.

Compile a list of companies that you’d like to work for and research relevant positions within those organizations.

Only apply to jobs that closely fit your skills and experience, says Susan Strayer, a career coach in Washington. “If you want to become that wildcard choice, a 30% match isn’t going to cut it. You need to be as close to 100% as possible.”

It’s people, not paper: Tap your personal network of colleagues, friends and family to find those inside connections that can forward your résumé to decision makers. Join professional trade organizations and attend trade shows, conferences, and seminars.

 Make it easy to find you: Promote your availability by posting your résumé on networking websites like LinkedIn.com and on specific industry websites like ClearanceJobs.com or edjoin.org, a website for educators. Emphasize unique skills on your résumé since companies will search online databases when they have specialized needs.

 Follow up with employers since first hiring picks don’t always work out. The same job may get reposted six months down the line. You want to be available to that employer before they post the new job.

  

Future hiring trends

Here’s one disturbing trend that should have you focus on education and training:

Whenever companies start hiring freely again, job-seekers with specialized skills and education will have plenty of good opportunities. Others will face a choice: Take a job with low pay – or none at all.

Job creation will likely remain weak for months or even years. But once employers do step up hiring, some economists expect job openings to fall mainly into two categories of roughly equal numbers:

_ Professional fields with higher pay. Think lawyers, research scientists and software engineers.

_ Lower-skill and lower-paying jobs, like home health care aides and store clerks.

And those in between? Their outlook is bleaker. Economists foresee fewer moderately paid factory supervisors, postal workers and office administrators.

This has been going on for years, and it’s only going to get worse. You can’t rely on walking into a factory and getting a well-paying job. Those days are gone.
