career key

This is a tough one. There are times when you have to cut your losses, but it’s also important to learn how to improve situations.

The question came from an article about mistakes everyone should make:

Even if the boss is horrible and the pay is bad, don’t just give up and jump ship. Stick around for a while and try to find a solution — even if it seems like a terrible move at the time. “The way you handle yourself in this situation will forever shape the way you treat people when you’re in charge,” says Ryan Kahn, a career coach, founder of The Hired Group, and author of “Hired! The Guide for the Recent Grad.”

There is usually a lesson to be learned in every situation, particularly bad ones.

Still, this advice rings somewhat hollow without the context of each person’s circumstances. There’s a balance to be struck, and that’s what you should keep in mind. You don’t want to quit when things get tough, but at some point you have to move on.

Just think it through, give it some time, seek out advice from people you trust and don’t act impulsively and you’ll probably make the right decision.
